Hello there, and welcome to my new blog, “Nikki’s Nibbles!”
It’s on this site that I will chronicle my adventures in my kitchen as I try out recipes from all sorts of sources: magazines, online searches and, of course, my collection of cookbooks. Now, while I probably won’t get too adventurous in what I choose to experiment with in my galley kitchen — I do have to eat what I make after all, and I am on something of a budget so delicacies like saffron and truffles will have to wait for another time — I will try out new options for favorite ingredients when the recipe intrigues me.
What prompted this little adventure you might ask? It’s quite simple, really. I’ve always liked to cook but lacked any serious inspiration to do more than boil some water and stir in some potato flakes, cheese and spices. So over the years, I’ve been building up my kitchen with all sorts of goodies that would be of use should I ever find that inspiration. Now, armed with all kinds of appliances — things like a waffle iron, crock pot, blender, Kitchenaid mixer and thanks to this Christmas, a new Cuisinart food processor (see photo; yes, the mixer matches my orange kitchen!) — lots of kitchen tools and a few pots and pans, I finally felt ready.
Fortunately, I’ve also been collecting cookbooks over the years, as gifts from Mom or other friends or ones I’ve found myself, so I have plenty of material for this experiment. Not to mention all those recipes I’ve clipped from magazine after magazine, some of which I’ve even tried out on my aunt (she likes me to come visit and bring along a few things to try so she can sit back and relax). For each recipe attempted, the source will be identified as accurately as I can get it; some of those clippings might not have the full magazine citation on the page. However, I will
include recipes and instructions for those creations that are mine or Mom’s (as long as she approves) so that I don’t infringe on any copyrights. Besides, you might want to add the cookbook to your own collection; many can be found at your local discount bookstore or online.
Now the site is up and ready to go, my cookbooks are dog-eared with the recipes that look perfectly delectable, my clippings are organized into their appropriate categories, and I’ve got evenings and weekends free to have a little fun in the kitchen. While it might not be as fun as snacking on some fish and chips in a Dublin hotel on my birthday vacation (picture above), this second experiment of mine should prove to be just as palatable.
Bon appétit!
